Comments on this Site: Purpose of this Site The moderator of this Web site can be contacted at sejablon@gmail.com. Some commonly asked questions are answered in the Questions about this Site forum.
During early 2009, this site became inundated with forum spam. All spam has been removed, and all spammers' memberships have been revoked. As of June 24, 2009, St. John's Forum is spam-free. In order to deter future spam, the registration method has changed. If you desire to register for St. John's Forum, instead of hitting the register button, send an e-mail with your desired username to sejablon@gmail.com. Make sure to spell the e-mail address correctly. Otherwise, your e-mail will be bounced back to you. You will be registered to the site, generally within a week. This procedure is more onerous, but it will hopefully stop the creation of new spam.
What is the purpose of this site? Does this site help the college to become a better place by bringing information to the forefront or does it harm the college's reputation for no good reason? |

Enhanced Security at Croquet At the last croquet match, there were a number of armed security officers present. What purpose does this additional security serve? Does the presence of armed guards serve to protect members of the college community and visitors, or does it increase the likelihood of a violent conflict? |

Security and Admin.: Attacks and Their Aftermath There have been multiple charges of attacks on students. Students are sometimes punished after being attacked. Does anyone have information on these attacks? What steps should be taken to prevent the administration from accepting the word of staff over students? Is it reasonable for students to defend themselves against such attacks? What constitutes excessive punishment? |

Security and Admin.: Responsibility and Honesty The 2006-2007 Annapolis student handbook on page 32 states, " Responsibility ... For the good of the community, it [the college] also expects all students, regardless of consequences, to report their own misdeeds, to try to persuade others to report their own misdeeds, and to report the misdeeds of those who cannot be persuaded. Failure or refusal to report misbehavior may lead to disciplinary action up to and including expulsion." On page 33 the student handbook continues, "Honesty The college expects community members to be honest. The college expects students never to lie and never to withhold information, either about themselves or about their fellow students. Dishonesty may lead to disciplinary action up to and including expulsion."
Is it fair to define silence as dishonesty? Should students be required to face disciplinary action for failing to turn in their fellow students? How does the administration live up to the principles of responsibility and honesty? |

Security and Administration: Cocaine Clicking on this link will take you to Daniel deVise's Article about the drug investigation on campus, Students Punished in Drug Probe. |
|
|
Security and Administration: Cocaine The Annapolis campus decided to deal with cocaine use by calling students rumored to be cocaine users in to see Judy Seeger, Annapolis assistant dean. Judy Seeger falsely claimed to have eyewitness testimony that the accused students were involved in cocaine. Students were told that the college would come down hard on them unless they named others who were using drugs. The named students were then subjected to the same treatment. Many were suspended for a year or expelled. Several seniors had their degrees withheld for a year, sometimes damaging their graduate school plans. One student was expelled who refused on principle to co-operate with the investigation; he would neither name names nor tell Judy Seeger if he had ever used illegal drugs. Is it fair for students to be coerced into accusing other students? Is it reasonable for students to be punished for keeping their suspicions of other students to themselves? How should the college deal with drug use on campus? |

Security and Administration: Expulsion for Alcohol The Fiske Guide to Colleges says about St. John's, "Although no one under 21 can be served under strict campus rules that include expulsion if caught, students admit that underage undergrads can easily tip their share of the brew." The Insider's Guide to the Colleges says, "...underage drinking, if caught, is dealt severely." Has anyone ever heard of an underage student getting expelled for alcohol use? If this penalty seems harsh, what should the appropriate penalty (if any) be for underage drinking? |

Security and Administration: Mark St. John St. John's College fired Mark St. John, the athletic director of the Santa Fe campus. Many students showed up at an all-college meeting to protest this. Should the administration be more open with students in their reasons to dismiss employees? |

Security and Administration: Roxanne Seagraves St. John's fired Roxanne Seagraves, the Alumni director for the Santa Fe campus, during croquet week-end. How much warning should the college provide when they feel unhappy enough about an employee's performance to seek dismissal? Is it fair to fire an employee for a minor violation? |

Security and Administration: Student Handbook Page 53 of the 2006-2007 Santa Fe student handbook states, "The college reserves the right to dismiss at any time a student who in our judgment is undesirable or whose continuation in the school is detrimental to the student or his or her fellow students. Such dismissal may be made without specific charge. Students who are suspended or dismissed will receive no refund of fees." Students have been dismissed without being given a reason. This clause in the student handbook eliminates all real authority of the student review board. If no reason is given, how can the college justify the arbitrary dismissal of a student? Why wouldn't the college give a reason for a student's dismissal? What kind of student does the college consider undesirable? |

Student Body: Diversity St. John's College claims 8% minority enrollment. Others dispute this figure, claiming the college has as little as 1% minority enrollment. What efforts are the college making to recruit a more diverse student body? Should the college make more of an effort to seek out and admit more minorities? |

Student Body: Gay Students In the comments section of wikipedia, David Vidaurre wrote, "...St. John's also does not try to hide the fact that they are included in the Princeton Review--in fact on the homepage of the website you could see the Princeton Review rankings proudly displayed. (however, in the press release from the college, two lists were ommitted: the 'Accepting of Gays' list and the 'Different Races Mingle' list...I found this disturbing)..." What problems does the college have with the treatment of gay students?

Students: Travis Pittman Travis Pittman, currently a sophomore in the Santa Fe campus, lives off campus but passed out in upper commons. Security woke him up and told him that he could not stay there. They gave him a ride halfway to his house. He slept the remainder of the night on the steps of a nearby church. What steps should the college take to ensure that inebriated students get home safely? |
