I'm considering setting up a St. John's Wiki.

My friend at NYU has shown me their Wiki and it seems like a wonderfully useful idea. They use it to help students find a number of things, such as off campus housing, the best places to eat, helpful resources for classes, etc.

If you don't know what a wiki is or how it works, visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki

I've set up a wiki using the same engine as wikipedia.org before. If I do this, I'd like to not have to use my own server, which I already use for my buisness, http://www.cdbabel.com, which will soon itself be in wiki form. I doubt, however, that the school would pay for such a server, however, polity might!

I've set up a wiki before, which is still in its testing stages. Check it out at www.wikirecording.org.

If you create a wiki or any other website, post the address and the moderator will add a link to it. In the meantime, you or anyone can put information about off campus housing, the best places to eat, helpful resources for classes, etc. on this site under this topic.

A wiki is an intriguing idea. Would it be possible to get the web pages/site on the network for people to access and scope out? If you get that up, Polity would much rather give money to a project they can see than a kid going "Hay guys I wanna start a website so can I have $X?"

A local wiki is an intriguing idea, but dealing with the technical side of things could be absolutely silly. First we'd need to get PHP 4 installed on our local servers (Which would not make the tech people happy, i'm sure) and install a MySQL server on our local servers. It would also end up having an ugly name like Local://folder here/folder here/ folder here/

Generally an outside server would do a better job. I'm looking into a possible free server with ads, though. If we can, keeping polity out of it might be nice. But a free server might not be as reliable (company goes under, or something) nor as customizable.

My other wiki is going quite well on the other hand. www.wikiRecording.org

Crazy Times.

I've found a wiki server that will fit our needs for 60 bucks a year. This makes me think that I don't even need to get polity involved. I could probably just take up a collection, making life easy for me. Polity could maybe take over payments after its up and going (if its useful).

Here's the site:

I think that a wiki for Program stuff, never mind where to eat or get a beer in Nap town or Fanta Se (this stuff is covered ad nauseum in so many other places), would be very useful. You should keep the Polity and the school out of it. If it's only $60 for a year and you know the company is worth half a damn, throw a party and raise money for it on your own. Own it yourself. If the current climate at the school makes this not a feasible option, post a reply and I'll pay for it. (But I don't want to own it.)

This is a good idea - throw a party and charge cover. You'll get $60 easy, and then it can be both an annual thing and good times for all!

Also, I think having local stuff is still a really good idea; I want to know what students think of restaurants, bars and the like, not what some codger who thinks he can write a local guide has to say.

I've always thought that a St. John's wiki would be a really cool idea. It should have information on spesific people, interesting things that have happened, that sort of thing. Of course it can't be too intrusive. It should also have a major article on the Straussian conspiracy.
